Senior backend hiring in 2026: evaluating AI-augmented delivery honestly

What to ask (and what to avoid) when hiring senior backend, technical lead, and AI integration engineers — proof, guardrails, and production ownership.

Interview questions should probe ownership: “Tell me about a time you shipped AI-assisted code — what did you not delegate?” Look for specifics on tests, auth, and rollback — not tool names alone.

Red flags: candidates who cannot explain their query layer, who merge unreviewed SQL, or who claim advanced ML without integration proof. Green flags: clear specs, CI discipline, honest skill levels (e.g. LLM integration intermediate, growing).

Three hiring lanes overlap in practice: senior developer (depth), technical lead (scope + mentoring), AI backend (integrations + guardrails). One person can cover two lanes; job posts should say which outcomes matter most.

I publish screening answers on my work-with-me page for transparency — recruiters and candidates both benefit from concrete narratives instead of buzzwords.
